For more than 140 years, Helly Hansen has been creating professional-grade gear designed to help people stay protected in demanding conditions. The brand’s story began in 1877, when Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen sought a better way to protect his sailors from harsh Nordic weather.

By applying linseed oil to cotton canvas, he created flexible, waterproof clothing. Soon afterwards, Helly and his wife, Margarethe, began producing oilskin jackets and pants in Moss, Norway. Their waterproof gear achieved immediate success, earning an award at the Paris World Expo in 1878 and marking the beginning of the Helly Hansen legacy.
